I’m sorry to hear this is happening. If you call the office where you applied for a housing voucher, they can tell you where you are on the wait list. It might be worth updating your application anyway, especially if you’ve become homeless since you applied—it could bump you up on the list. Also make sure they have the correct mailing address and phone number for you.

In addition to being on the State section 8 list, it may be worth checking if your town has a separate list. I believe South Portland has a list of their own, and other towns might as well.

Asking General Assistance for rental help in your town might be a way to get stable in the short term. It’s a very financially strict program, and a challenge to work through the rental process, but I’ve seen people get successfully housed through them.

Good luck!

Hey I’m not sure how familiar you are with human social interaction, but if you’re struggling please remember that people like to talk about things that are currently happening, like: the weather. And also how much they hate people talking about the weather. Hope this helps!

I have an apartment.

Monitor heater and electric baseboard: 65-68 when I’m home/awake (it’s an old monitor so I just set it at the lowest setting). I use the electric baseboard sparingly: when I go to bed and wake up I set it at 65 to take the chill off the bedroom for about 20 mins.

50 for freeze protection (via electric baseboard backup) when I’m not home and overnight.

It’s good to be thinking about it. Depending on when your income went up you may still be able to keep MaineCare for your kid for a while.

And keep in mind that you can’t get MaineCare and a subsidy for a marketplace plan at the same time.

Subsidized Section 8 housing is one type of affordable housing, and I think that’s what you’re thinking of. The waiting list for those is years long. I got on it when my kid was 12 and got called for an apartment after her 18th birthday, when I no longer qualified for family housing.

There is also “affordable housing” through tax credit programs for developers. This type of housing is often unaffordable to people who are very low income.

Yes:

“Not unlike other areas in the region, the Kancamagus, known to locals as “The Kanc”, is home to an abundance of hiking trails, walking paths, picturesque ponds, natural wonders, and many other must-see stops. It is open year-round, although the only major intersection, Bear Notch Road, which connects the highway to the town of Bartlett, is closed during the winter months.”

Route 88 from Falmouth to Yarmouth is scenic and historic and not too far from you

You could also just keep driving up Route 1. Some of it isn’t that interesting but it hugs the coast and goes through a lot of old towns, and the places where you can see the water are always lovey

I personally love Route 17 towards Rangeley, with a stop at Height of Land, but that’s quite a haul from where you are, and I don’t know what road conditions are like up there currently

There’s also the Kangamagus Highway in NH that is lovely, although again, be alert for winter road conditions

You are right.

Also “The Authority may designate different maximum speeds … during periods of adverse atmospheric or weather conditions. Maximum speeds … during any period of adverse atmospheric or weather conditions shall be in accordance with signs displayed for such zones. All regulatory and zoning signs displayed on the Turnpike shall be obeyed.”

and also

“Motor vehicles shall not be driven in excess of the mechanical limits of vehicles or tires. If traffic, weather, pavement or other conditions render the maximum allowable speed hazardous, the speed of motor vehicles shall be reduced consistent with such conditions.”

Yeah, I mean, I guess it’s a little cringey to tell other people how to drive, but the people here saying you have to go fast are doing the same thing.

I’ve lived here almost 50 years and I’ve totaled two cars due to driving too fast on sketchy winter roads and my neck is permanently jacked. I’m not interested in the insurance hike or the chance that I might hurt myself or someone else in another crash.

I personally drive as fast as I feel safe driving. Sometimes that’s the speed limit, sometimes it’s less, sometimes it’s more. If there’s a big line of cars behind me and no place for them to pass I will pull over, but I’m not going to put my own safety at risk because people have a hot foot either.
