Damn son, I'm lucky if I finish 2 on average
This year I've been able to read 5 total (followed by 2 audiobook listens).
Prior to this year? I think I read 1 per year for the past 4 years.

I'd say yes, go straight to Project Hail Mary. That book is an absolute treat.
You can then go back and read Artemis later. It's not bad, but it's his weakest book. The plot of Artemis is great and exactly what you would expect from an Andy Weir novel, but the characters fall a little flat.

The first time I read The Martian I wanted at least an epilogue.
Thankfully the movie gave us that, but I still wanted to read more about his recovery in the Hermes, his return to Earth, and what he did with his life after NASA in the book.

I read Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir over the course of 3 days. And this is a nice, fat 500+ page book too. I simply could not put it down.

Damn, what a killer list! I just randomly clicked the NPR "books we love", saw the display of random book titles I have never seen before, found a book which piqued my interest, and now I have a new novel heading my way that I otherwise would never have found. Score!

Oh that's too funny! I just finished "Artemis" a couple of weeks ago. It took me about a week to get to the half-way point, but that is when the murder mystery really ramped up and I just kept reading and reading.
I know that "Artemis" is the weakest of the Andy Weir trilogy of novels, but it's still a fun read. It's like cold pizza with just cheese. Still damn good.

This, absolutely this. If the book is amazing I have to FORCE myself to take breaks otherwise I will just scarf down the story and it will make my brain feel bloated.
Over the summer as I was reading "Project Hail Mary" and by the time I was at the halfway mark I was blasting through the chapters. I had to physically force myself to put down the book and go for a bike ride, just so that I could process everything that was happening.
By taking breaks it really let my brain simmer on the story and characters. I still finished the second half over the course of 2 days, but I took breaks damn it!

Oh yes, absolutely.
I use them as a spring board for ideas on what to read next on long-ass trips that I need to take. So many books, so little time -- that kind of thing.
Anyway, I have a long trip coming up and needed to get some books and audiobooks into my Kindle. I'm a big Sci-Fi nerd so I started browsing the Hugo Award winners and downloaded a few books. I'm actually looking forward to reading the Forever War.
I then looked at the audiobook selections and discovered that the 2022 winner of "Audiobook of the Year" went to Project Hail Mary. Hot damn!

The great thing about the author is that he makes sci-fi easily accessible to the casual reader and his books are always full of humor. You don't have to be a sci-fi fan to enjoy the book. I always recommend it to people if they are curious. If you don't want to borrow it from your library, the audiobook is also fantastic. It won "Audiobook of the Year" so it's absolutely worth a listen!

Project Hail Mary by Andy Weir got me out of an almost 5-year reading slump. I devoured that book over the course of 4 days. I've now finished four more books since this summer and that's quite an accomplishment considering my free time is essentially at zero these days.

I have heard great things about the audiobook. If you wanna take another crack at it, I've always suggested an audiobook as a good second approach. Having the story read to you just hits different sometimes.

I grew up on Star Trek physics logic. If it sounds scientific enough, I'm willing to suspend my disbelief for the sake of the story. It helps that I don't know shit about fuck when it comes to chemistry.

I know, right? That is why I waited so long to pick up this book. Even my closest friends (who are literary trash reading nerds said "you can skip this book").
I expected this to be an abortion of a novel like "Ready Player Two" or some such nonsense.
Artemis is fine. It's not winning any awards, but I still had a good time reading it.

I def rolled my eyes with Jazz's attitude and "Marvel Universe" quips that came at a rapid fire pace from all the characters even during the most serious scenes.
I feel like Andy Weir really took the valid criticisms to heart (too much swearing from The Martian, too many sarcastic quips from every character in Artemis, lack of a female voice) and refined all that for Project Hail Mary. A good author grows as he writes, and I feel like he's done that.

I think the premise of a moon heist murder-mystery sprinkled with espionage is awesome. The character development is what was lacking.
There was just too many "Josh Wheton-esq" quips during heightened tension scenes that really undercut the sincerity of the story. The overall plot really suffered because of that.

I know he wrote a novella called Randomize. Hell, I know he even wrote a book a long time ago called "Theft of Pride" under the pen name Jack Sharp. It was never published though. You can only download the 243K file and read it on your eReader/computer. When I have time I'll tackle those 2 stories and see where Artemis truly ranks, LOL
So far I would say from best to worst is:
-
Project Hail Mary
-
The Martian
-
Artemis
-
The short story: The Egg

That's why I have to be very selective about what books I listen to when I do hobbies, clean, or drive on my commute. If I need to pay attention, I can only sit and snuggle up in a blanked on the lazy-boy chair.

Oh I 100% agree that it is far weaker than The Martian or Project Hail Mary. This was very much his sophomore book.
That being said, fans were making this book out to be like some kind of "Twilight" level bad! Oh heavens, no. If this book were written by any other author it would have been much better received. I think everyone's expectations for an Andy Weir story was sky high and they expected something much stronger based on his previous books.
Were they let down? Yes. Is it a bad book? No, not at all.
