To be fair to btkk... he did say we have better night life in NYC, which includes concerts, Broadway, comedy clubs... even if they all technically have day time options.

AirTrain is $8 on exit if you are coming from the airport at Howard or Jamaica stations. You either pay directly or through your metrocard. Seems like you may have lucked out with an MTA employ that didn't care, or as Arleare13 said, might have paid without realizing it. If you are transferring directly to the subway line it will be $10.75 (2.75 subway fare + 8 Air Train fare). If you are just leaving it would be $8. If you are just entering the A Train off the street, it's just 2.75.
edit: personally I do feel it's a "scam" in that it's $8 for the AirTrain, but shiiieeeeet they really know how to work that supply and demand. Not so much a scam that it's 10.75 for airtrain + subway
