33rd street would drop you closer, but depending on your tolerance for a walk you'd still have to make a transfer to the subway.

And each and every one of them descends on Times Square at the exact moment that I'm just trying to get back to the Port Authority.
And I kind of love to hate it!

Well, I mean, people spend $1,000s just to spend 1 week wandering around Manhattan.
Anyway, I like NYC. I like NJ too. Let's not have ugly little sister syndrome, that's Connecticut.

Like someone else said Jersey City is a big city with big variations in prices. I live in a building with a shared yard, free laundry, no parking, no free internet, 1 bedroom, and the renter in our building pays 2,100/month. And this isn't downtown JC.
edit: you'll get more specific answers over at r/jerseycity

A fuckton. Why don't you go on Zillow or Realtor and use filters to see what's available? Also, if you're seeking a private backyard then what you're looking for probably doesn't exist.

Paulus Hook/Newport are both very safe. I'd recommend Paulus Hook over Newport though. Newport is really dead at night and doesn't have much of a neighborhood feel. It depends on what you're looking for though.
Overall I'd recommend Jersey City. Especially if you're working in the Village. Easy commute.

A bus wouldn't be so much faster. Port Imperial to Hoboken is 12 minutes, Hoboken to Christopher street is 10 minutes. Also that puts you in the West Village vs Port Authority.

I'm always tempted to start blaring bagpipe music out of my phone. But I try to avoid escalating situations with people who are already showing that they're assholes.

I was about to recommend that you go with your mom if that would help assuage some of her concerns. And buy her lunch after!

Mistake 1.
Is it just me or are we getting weekly "I'm new to planet earth and escalated a situation with a homeless person" posts now? Or is it just because that one post from the guy who took a homeless guy to an ATM lives rent free in my head?

Takes me 20-25 minutes, it's really not bad. Biking would be pretty quick.
Also the 87 runs to the PATH. And the light rail.

There's a bit more on Palisade. I walk to the PATH (told you it was controversial).

We are mostly residential, but if this is your takeaway I think you need to walk around a bit more. Also I have one trick that gives me easy access to the PATH, but it's kind of controversial. I PATH into the city in the morning, bus back home. Never really felt unsafe here.

Get a new job. If you're currently underpaid and there's no work/life balance it won't improve with a promotion.
Edit: also now is a decent time to look, jobs in NY have to post salary ranges starting tomorrow.
