I just hiked it on November 1st. Not peak season, for sure, but it wasn't super busy. I applied for, and got, a permit in their lottery. Though if you got to the Angel's trailhead before 10am, there wasn't a ranger to check, anyway. Highly recommend the hike. Unless you hate heights like the two women I met. Another guy and I carefully guided them back to the trailhead after they got to a point where they froze from being freaked out.

I use an Osprey Porter and it's fantastic. And an Osprey daypack can clip on the outside so you can carry both your carry on and personal item hands free.

I did catch the lineup back in June and it was great. I got my 6 year old daughter a legit telescope for Christmas, so we took it out to the countryside at 4am on a Saturday. It was the first time either of us had seen the rings of Saturn with our own eyes and it was a magical moment to share with my little girl. She even wanted to do it the next morning (but clouds weren't allowing it).
