I’d have to agree. Back in my New Jersey high school days all the cool kids wanted to go to Goddard. We know where that ended up.

I remember this. Kids would just cruise around the block endlessly till late at night. Woolworths was a dive coffee counter. Ben & Jerry’s ice cream didn’t exist and Gordon Paquette had just lost the mayoral election to Liberty Union candidate Bernie Sanders. Oh, and the pit hadn’t been dug out for the Underground Mall.

I can remember the cheap linoleum on the floor and the worn Formica on the bar along with the 8 oz glasses of draft Budweiser for seventy five cents. Was it all just a dream?

When I lived in Burlington, back in the old days, it was common for people who mostly didn’t grow up there to have a dog. It seemed that many of these dogs were owned by women who were at a stage in their life when it was natural for the mothering instinct to have kicked in but the thought of choosing a mate or significant other to enable raising a human child didn’t fit their lifestyle or career/educational plans. Having a dear and devoted canine fulfilled that need nicely. All this was understandable and didn’t bother me as long as they were happy. The problem was that these dog owners needed to walk their dogs and would dutifuly make their rounds and allow their dog to shit on the ground usually in the grass along the sidewalks. No one EVER cleaned up after their dog back then and really a couple of turds on the winter snow wasn’t something that was all that terrible, I guess. That’s just the way it was. Come Spring as the snow melted the reality of the situation made itself painfully obvious to everyone as the snow melted and the accumulated piles of feces melted and drained down into the storm sewer which everyone was aware drained directly into Lake Champlain. Sometime after that, the city enacted an ordinance that required people to clean up after their dogs. The improvement was dramatic and now one rarely needs to endure the affront of of fresh steamer along the sidewalk. Sometimes government works.

Look into buying poles from the phone company. I can’t remember how we did it way back when we put ours in but I think we contracted the pole through the phone company. We went underground for the last 150 feet which also saved some money. Back then there was hardly any fiber optic so I’ll probably wish I had that too.

So you can actually ride down to Beaudry lane but then you’d have to go back out on 2a and brave the traffic to get to Taft corner. Brilliant.

In order to ride to Tafts corner you’d have to ride along 2a. The shoulder in front of VSECU is pretty minimal for such a high traffic location and I’m not sure the sidewalk is legal for bicycles. Is it? Kinda sucks since Essex Jct and Tafts corner are two high density residential and commercial areas with no safe path for access on a bicycle.

The amount of carbon released to burn 6500 btu’s is zero if you consider the other side of the equation which is that the tree will be replaced with another tree. That’s what a renewable resource is. Of course you have the gas in the chainsaw and the trucking you need to consider but nothing is free I guess. Finite resource vs. a renewable resource. It’s not perfect but it’s better than sending dollars to Saudi Arabia I guess.

I’ve read that on average, at least in my climate, that an acre of land will grow a cord of wood per year. I know my land has more trees now than when I bought it. It’s grown faster than I can use it. I realize not everyone has the luxury of owning their own wood lot and not all climates can support that. I also know that if not properly managed it can be depleted. But it seems crazy not to use it though, especially in Vermont which currently has more trees than ever.
