Yup! Community Board members aren't elected. They're handpicked by local electeds and then voted on by people who are already on the board. They are in no way representative of an entire opinion of any neighborhood, in fact they are usually outliers in terms of homeownership, car ownership, age and other demographics.

Rikers is an internationally notorious deadly jail facility. I think it's fair to call what we have here a police state so long as we have Rikers.

I have to laugh that the DOC Captain mentioned in the articme who used that hashtag in her email has this in her Facebook bio:
>"I'm a child of GOD with BIG dreams. I LOVE Jesus and JESUS loves ME!!!'
Nothing says " I love Jesus" like being a xenophobic jailer.

They have always been a NYC local news outlet. Have you ever bothered to look at their site as scroll through their coverage?

The city that makes landlords pay for refusing to maintain the property they don't live in because they were shacked up in Jersey. Boo hoo.

Gothamist has reported on all three issues. So you're angry that you read this first? Or that they reported on it at all, in addition to the other things?

I have to hand it to the staff that actually followed through, followed the law and fined the Mayor. That had to be scary, especially when he showed up with the top mayor's office lawyer to scare them.

You're trying real hard to not understand the issue. What did chasing them on the sidewalk do except put more people in danger? They didn't catch them by driving up on the sidewalk which they're not supposed to do. I'm pretty sure high speed chases are prohibited here. They didn't catch him until he got out of the tunnel in Red Hook. So what they did was incredibly stupid, dangerous, and useless.

I mean, that's literally what he did. Chasing him on the sidewalks didn't stop him. It just put people in even more danger.

You think NYPD should have pursued a high speed chase on the sidewalks?
This is their job. They absolutely deserve shit when they do something stupid and dangerous.

The more logical and likely answer is he was trying to commit suicide by cop.

Does anyone know why NYPD decided to chase after the U-Haul on the sidewalk? I thought car chases were prohibited on the street, not to mention the sidewalk. Anyone have insight? Sounds like a dangerous blunder on their part.

"Meme opinion." Ok.
When someone is shot, do the headlines say "man shot by gun" or do they say "man shot by [insert human being]? You know the answer. Car culture is a death cult, for real.

This is true. This man clearly did this on purpose, but the drivers there acting "normally" are insane. Probably once a week I have a close call. When I'm in the crosswalk and have the light or am at a stop sign. There is ZERO traffic enforcement here.

It's sick how we dehumanize crimes committed by drivers. It's important to say a DRIVER hit someone, the car didn't do it on its own.

I'm sorry to hear that your mom is suffering, but wishing death en masse upon residents of a long term care facility hoping your mother will die is something you may want to keep to yourself.

In a hospital setting, it shouldn't be left up to individual choice. You are surrounded by other people. Hospitals should do what's best for the entirety of their patients and staff, not bend over backwards for ignorant brats who don't care about anyone but themselves.

When my mom was dying in the ICU after a fall last year, the same day she passed, I remember waiting in line at check in at the hospital in front of someone like that. There was a woman in an American flag hat (of course) behind me huffing and tsk-ing and she literally started GROWLING like a lion (I am not kidding). She said "grrr" out loud. The she started yelling about how HER RIGHTS were being infringed upon, making a massive scene. All because she had to wait in line 2 minutes to be checked in with a picture ID and put on a mask rather than walk right into a hospital without anybody bothering to know who she was.
I don't know what it is, but being asked to take basic precautions in a hospital apparently turns these people feral.
mowotlarx t1_j88kvac wrote
I mean, of course! Anyone who doesn't want to slow the spread of bacteria and viruses in a hospital among patients, staff and visitors is doing it wrong.

The delivery workers in congregate in my neighborhood are all unassuming and polite when they wait around for deliveries. Yes, I don't love when they sometimes drive up on the sidewalks, but I've been nearly hit far more often by cars than them. I really don't see why NIMBYs have an issue with this. Delivery workers aren't a group I'd consider "undesirable" in my neighborhood. They're just doing their jobs... incidentally for the people in that neighborhood.
