I liked Pratchett's comment on it. Something like, "It ends up that what cities are built on is mostly older cities."

Wait, figure skating is scripted?

Nah, two separate origins. One from aviation, and one from early steam engines/trains. Urban dictionary just has them mixed together.
Steam engines had the pressure regulator with spinning balls on it. Aviation had you pushing the levers all the way to the (fire)wall.
But I'm certain that both of them just retained popularity because they do sound sexual.

It's a valid theory. Especially when you realize that it gets released back into the blood as old people shrink.
So as they've gotten older, all the paint chips they ate and the gasoline they smelled is probably coming back to bite us.

Reply to comment by mortaneous in TIL the price of textbooks increases by an average of 12% with each new edition by ExperienceKCC
20 years ago, most of my courses after year two of university, the professors insisted that the newest edition of the book was required, as well as the three supplemental books that were necessary, even though they would never be directly referenced during the class.
I'm sure it was purely coincidental that they were the authors of the books. We were free to take up any complaints with the department head (who was the instructor), or the ethics committee (which included the instructor.)
While I'd hope that kind of shit has gotten better, I'd be shocked if it has.

Ray Porter (Bobiverse) and Nick Podehl (A Pattern of Shadow and Light) are also both amazing.
I'm in about the same boat as you. Now when I see a book I've been waiting for, and they've gotten Wil Wheaton or another bookreader instead of a voice actor I get a little sad.
