Whitetail is closest but often icy. Liberty is good, but I think roundtop is more beginner friendly.

I grew up here.
I only offer a ride home for two reasons;
- Their place is on the way to my place, like directly.
- I would like to hang out more and the metro will close/there is no bus to their house.

Is this a strategy for pedestrian safety? If so,

Is a particular kind of morbid humor.

This!
I dont know what's happened the last few years but for now this is reality and it's better to adjust than to get hurt.
I'm also a fan of crossing behind cars if they're at the crosswalk already.

>Let's say all of DC was one zone. A rider could take the Red Line from Ft. Totten to Woodley Park, and just pay $2.25. A rider could also take the Green Line from Ft. Totten to West Hyattsville (just one stop), but because the trip would cross a fare zone, the rider would pay $3.25 for that trip.
Yeah, where I live, im directly between two metro stops, one in one zone and the other in a more expensive one. But the bus only goes to the stop in the more expensive zone, so even though I live in the zone that would be cheaper to travel from, it's more complicated to get to that stop and I'd pay much more for just starting one stop over.

I won't speak for all, but most of us public school kids didn't have cars so this wouldn't be possible lol. I've also never heard of it.
