Reply to TIL that in an effort to save $43.5, the Canadian Mint mailed the dies of the new $1 coin via a discount courier over using an armored car- which were promptly stolen and have never been found. This would lead to the adoption of the Loonie design as an emergency replacement. by Padgriffin
We also rarely talk about the Big Maple Leaf, an annoying piece of fiddling small change consisting of a coin 20 inches diameter containing 100Kg of 5 nines pure gold. Six of these were minted & the current owners are Queen Elizabeth II; Oro Direct, a Spanish gold trading company; Boris Fuchsmann and two anonymous individuals in Dubai.
A coin owned by Boris Fuchsmann, which had been on loan for public display in the Münzkabinett of Berlin's Bode Museum since 2010, was stolen on March 27, 2017. It has not been recovered, and is believed to have been melted down.
The theft was performed by someone who took the simple expediency of visiting during the day & unlocking a nearby window then coming back at night with a wheelbarrow.

Reply to comment by bolanrox in TIL that Swiss Balloonist, Auguste Piccard, was the inspiration for both Professor Calculus, in the Tintin comics, and that Gene Roddenberry named Captain Jean-Luc Picard in Star Trek after him. by es_price
Plus not only did Auguste go to the stratosphere in a pressurised gondola, crash on a glacier & have to survive a night up there until rescued.
But he also designed the bathyscaphe Trieste to explore the deepest parts of the ocean & his grand-nephew took it with us navy personnel to the bottom of challenger deep.
Plus one grandson of the family was with another pilot the 1st people to successfully circumnavigate the globe in a balloon.
You have to admit that any family that can boast the highest, deepest & farthest unpowered exploration is a family worth being a descendant of.

Reply to LPT: Get rid of annoying cookie consent popups on websites with ublock origin. by Altruistic_Mood_8025
For so many reasons ublock origin is a better idea for blocking untrusted 3rd party content & 1st party annoyances than many others.
A point that should be noted is that soon because of chrome adopting their Manifest V3 API, adblockers on chrome based browsers will become far less effective, at the benefit of becoming faster & more secure.
If the aim is effectiveness then using ublock origin on a non-chrome based browser, Firefox for example is suggested.

I think he knows, though I would not put it past him to stub his toe on that weird doorstop & wonder where mumsey got it from.
I wonder what the inheritance tax on something like that is & does it count as a fungible asset.
