Amtrak is cheaper further out. Driving to New Haven is how I would do it. Many options on Metro North to Grand Central or Amtrak to Penn Station. Metro North is cheapest and most frequent. Amtrak is quieter, cleaner and a bit faster. It really depends on where you’re going because Grand Central and Penn Station are on opposite sides of Midtown.

I’ve had good luck doing activities. Motorcycle club or racing sailboats. Even if you’re not super sports oriented you might join a softball league or a soccer league. 20 somethings in New Haven play kickball and that’s been a huge social outlet for some of my employees.

Pre-Covid I went to New York two days a week and Boston one day a week. New Haven, Branford, Guilford would all be good choices for both of you to access the train station in New Haven

New haven is great. I grew up in Beaver Hill. When we moved back to Ct, we opted for Branford due to my wife teaching in NH and our concerns with schools. If I were renting I would look in North Haven! Milford Hamden orange Branford and maybe West Haven.
