I stand corrected. Didnt realize he lived in Strafford now. Sorry, the blunt = bad threads get cringey for me. I'm a research scientist at msu and he's been a huge benefactor to university science research programs throughout his career. His staff have met with Schmitt to try and drive home how important science funding is but I doubt it will help. Sad to say Schmitt and Burleson are going to make Blunt and Long look like benevolent geniuses and both msu and mizzou are going to miss the guy, regardless of how we feel about his politics.

If you enjoy dancing, Dance with Me has drop in classes for $10 at the Savoy on Commercial. I believe tonight is waltz at 6:30 and line dancing at 7:30. Also here's a list of bands playing, I can personally vouch that Justin Larkin (folk/guitar) Shaun Munday (bass guitar) are both extremely good. Ruthies never disappoints with whoever they'll have. (all credit goes to Blues Society of the Ozarks who puts this together every week)

OTC actually just finished an advanced manufacturing training building that does exactly this. It's the big new place at the corner of national and division. MSU and Rolla have been working on their engineering coop program as well. You can now get a mechanical engineering degree there as well as electrical or civil. And don't quote me, but I believe otc offers a couple of years free as part of missouri's A+ scholarship program, which is pretty easy to get for high schoolers. The opportunities are there.

There's a lot of good paying light manufacturing work around here. People seem to overlook it. I worked those jobs through college then spent time in the local manufacturing community as an engineer when I graduated. In fact a lot of manufacturing employers will actually pay for your college if it's a degree that benefits the company. I worked with plenty of engineers who gor their degrees that way.

We actually have several of those villages. One of them is near my house, Eden Village. Tiny houses paid for by social security benefits with an onsite social worker.

CU actually gets almost half of their energy from renewables. I think it's 45%. They buy from an energy coop they belong to, and for years they've increased the wind and solar in that portfolio. They've also got a solar farm of their own, customers can choose to have their power come from that.

Definitely agreed on the green spaces and vertical gardens. The most attractive cities I've been in all have that in common, they seem to go from city to forest and back again seamlessly. It's one of the reasons I chose my neighborhood, though sadly they've been taking out a lot of the forested areas lately.

We actually have at least half a dozen neighborhood gardens and at least one cropshare farm (Millsap out by fellows lake). I think the Grant Beach neighborhood alone has 2 or 3. One is across from my parents house. Hit up Google when spring gets here. They're always looking for volunteers. My neighbor has one too but they usually just do it themselves and put a sign up inviting people to partake when it's harvest time. There's more of that in town than most people realize. Come summer and fall I don't buy a lot of tomatoes or eggs.

I'm sure there were at least 2 agencies. Sheriff's dept might be who responded to 911, then park service would be involved. Add in maybe some horse riders if they need to get farther down the trail faster, and an ambulance at the trailhead that might just be there to take him to a clearing for a medivac chopper, plus dispatchers, plus support staff, it can add up. It's a difficult place to get in and out of.

To be fair I don't see how he could be charged with manslaughter or anything like that. The decedent was an adult with plenty of experience and I assume signed a waiver when he joined the hiking club. The lack of a permit might be the only thing that he could be charged with. But it will be something at least. Remember, Al Capone was convicted of tax evasion.

For a while there was a hiking group in spfd led by a highway patrol guy (who coincidentally got a guy wrongfully convicted of murder years ago). He would have these massive camping weekends to try and sell outdoor goods to yuppies and he'd pull the same stuff. I remember trying to hike another relatively unknown trail and I must've had to stop for 20 carloads of his group in a place that could handle 6 cars at best. I despise big groups on trails. Especially for profit. If someone wants to see the things and places I enjoy I think that's something one should share for free.

I tried some cashew chicken today. Hk inn was packed so I went to the Cantonese place at chestnut and glenstone. I'm not normally a fan of cashew chicken but that was honestly pretty good.

You even lock doors while you're home? I leave the front door open whenever I'm home so my cat can give some stink eye to the neighbors cat. He does the same for his cat. Those cats sure hate each other. I usually lock my front door if I'm going to be gone more than a couple hours, and I lock my car overnight but that's about it. Haven't locked the back door in 20 years.

I'm sort of north central/east. I find it funny that this reddit group seems to view the parts of town I'm from as some sort of post apocalyptic wasteland full of meth fueled warlords. I tease my parents about that. They've lived in grant Beach for about 45 years. Also never had any problems. Most of the north side is lower income but that doesn't necessarily mean higher crime. There are certainly bad areas, but they're generally easy to spot and avoid.

In an ironic twist, much of our crime around this part of town takes place in hotels and businesses owned by persons from the subcontinent. My friend Rishi can tell some wild stories about n. Glenstone hotels he's worked at.

That second part is my problem too. I don't care for it so I can't really judge it. I've always been more of a general chicken fan and in that, Hong Kong inn is lacking. Maybe cashew is something they do well, who knows. Wish I'd heard that about Alamo when they still had it. I've started going to a little indie theater in joplin with a great food menu. Will have to see if they have cashew chicken.

I'm sure everyone will have differing experiences. Always locking my door would be a culture shock to me as well.

As someone who works and socializes with international staff and students at msu I feel confident in saying they'll be okay. Crime generally isn't as bad as those studies show here unless you're a part of it by choice and the op is moving into an environment where they'll have lots of support and fellow international students to help them learn their way around.

I don't know about south siders and kc/stl people but I grew up nearby and it was popular with central grads from my era. And now with their kids. Drury and CHS have some ties because of their proximity. Can't speak to their academics personally but my Rolla roommate did his pre engineering there and he was well prepared. They have a great radio station.

Not sure what you mean by on an island but they were always just part of the neighborhood.

There are swing and line dancing groups around here that are good for people just looking to have a platonic social circle that enjoy getting out and dancing. And at least one bar has a great book club (Hold Fast Brewery). You mentioned back in your country, I don't know where you're from originally but there are several international groups around here. GrupoLatinoAmericano does a lot of social events if you're from a Latin American country (or if you're not and you just want to learn more about them). Also meetup is a good website for looking for friends. I joined a meetup hiking group when I moved back into town after school. Met some cool people that way.

also, welcome to Springfield! :)
