Stay strong. Also, regularly check your credit. They sound like the sort of people who will take out cards in your name. If they do, do not be deterred from going to the cops.

I'm sorry bud, but that collection will never be the same. I think you should look at this experience as buying yourself a guilt free life away from all contact with your parents as soon as you can. They sound irredeemably cruel to me. Never trust them again.

There are ways to critically discuss classic books in a constructive way that doesn’t dismiss their legacy. There have been lots of discussions about “East of Eden” in this forum for instance. “The Handmaid’s Tale” has been revered for both its premise and prose for decades. It’s themes are so relevant that the book continues to be invoked daily in the United States. And yet OP dismisses it all as “too long with so little substance.” That’s just being deliberately obtuse or contrarian in order to provoke people.

I’m dealing with this with my mother. I settled on trying to get her to buy gold. It’s still tangible. She can still see her wealth. It at least keeps up with inflation. Easier to store. She’s not totally sold yet, but getting there. I know gold is usually not a good investment strategy, but anything is better than piles of cash hidden everywhere.

This is the correct advice. Buy used. Let the massive depreciation work in your favor instead of hitting you in the teeth.
