There was no correlation between reducing police budget and violent crime. Violent crime went up everywhere the year defunding the police was tried for unrelated reasons.

First, the article doesn't clarify who called in the report. Second, it's too early to tell. A man holding a knife in a house in and of itself doesn't warrant police attention. Third, the headline and article are written in a weird way by separating the firing of the officer's gun and the guy getting shot.

The police have incredible discretion in which incidents they respond to and how. So, that's a part of every police interaction.
