It depends on each type of product. If you mean phones then no. So many components of a phone advance fast enough that a phone that stays the same for decades is not at all what I want. I will actually want a refresh of the technology faster than a good phone goes out of support.

If it’s a washing machine then I would sure like to buy one that’ll last for decades at least and can have parts swapped out easily. I guess the biggest part of that difference is the washing machine doesn’t really advance that fast.

I sure don’t like waste but sometimes planned obsolesence isn’t the only reason old things end up less and less useful these days. I’d like to see total recycling of electronic gadgets, so once it’s too old for one reason or another it gets recycled and turned into the new improved version.

Herman Miller make damn fine chairs, had ours for 8 years. Once ruined a seat pad, you can just order a replacement in a massive range of colours and materials. Don’t regret a penny spent considering how long I’ve spent in the thing. Good now as the day it was new.

I have a Kenwood hand blender. It has a bunch of attachments and is all the blender I ever needed. Much more compact than a counter-top sort. 100% reliable in 7 years or so.

‘Oil changes are a scam’?

How do you live a long life and believe something like that?

Get a Honda Jazz or a goddamn Peugeot, that’s what old people drive.

I spent a lot of time watching. Didn’t do any real science. If I had to say one thing it’s that snakes are pretty simple and predictable in their behaviour once you get to know them. They are not clever animals but they are marvellous.

I think the thrust of their research is showing that they can hear airborne sound at all. Their exact reactions to different sounds is as you say, not well explored here.

I kept snakes a lot as a kid, won some pet shows and learned my enthusiastic ass off about them. It’s been a well known fact that they don’t hear airborne sound. Interesting that if you really test it, that turns out to be false.

Flexible screens are improving but no, there aren’t any great ones in mainstream products.

Samsung and similar bendy phones are the closest I think’s out there and they sure have their flaws and are in most usage cases, more breakable than their brittle counterparts.

One day though, wibbly wobbly fabric-like displays will be a thing. People have been working on it for decades, saw it on ‘Tomorrow’s World’ when I was a kid more than 20yrs ago.

Just not ready to compete with the best of brittle as a display and/or not durable enough just yet. But soon….

I must not be understanding the question. I can’t think of a water bottle that you can’t hand wash? Do you mean water bottles that are dishwasher only? Do they exist? Do you mean water bottles where you can fit your whole hand inside to wash? Because that sounds like a very large water bottle?

I love Falke wool slipper socks. The fuzz and knobbles on the base are insulating and feel good on a hard floor. Had mine for 5 years and no holes or problems. Wool is warm, breathes, lasts and wicks sweat. They aren’t super expensive but I think he could spend a lot more money and not get anything more effective.

The only time I haven’t appreciated Martin Freeman was when he was doing an American accent for Marvel.

Otherwise, I found him perfectly likable and have appreciated many of his roles. Also, he’s in Hot Fuzz so how bad can he be?

Got no issue with Eddie.

Gal can’t act and seems to have unsubstantiated delusions of grandeur.

I nominate Ryan Reynolds, I hit a limit with him and now I can’t hear his voice without being bored and irritated.

Chris Hemswoth as anyone but Thor. You are Thor from Marvel Chris and you can’t act like anyone else, live with it.

Vin Diesel. The most irrational one of them all, his cheesy smile and acting just winds me up.

Considering this is a coating that will eventually wear off I’m not sure I can fully agree with this statement.

“Our research is pushing in a different direction, where we actually solve the problem rather than putting a Band-Aid on the issue.”

I think actually solving the problem is one where our clothes are made out of things that aren’t harmful to the environment.

Not to say this isn’t very positive and reducing a problem vastly is great. But a coating that will wear off over years is pretty much a Band-Aid.

Does it not mean that your clothes become less environmentally friendly the longer you keep them?

But making your clothes last a long time is in itself, environmentally friendly.

Not quite solved when it’s like that.

Herman Miller chairs can last a lot longer than 10yrs. You can get replacement seat pads and other parts. We bought a pair 9 years or so ago. One has had a new seat pad the other is as-new. Not really any different now to when new.

A 1 yr old iphone last for quite a good while. About 4-5yrs later I sell it and buy another one. Hardly bifl but it keeps me in a functioning modern phone that just works.

Got no boasts to make about headphones, bought the Airpod Max when they came out. They are still 100% functional and have been brilliant but I doubt they’ll make it 10 years and certainly the battery will need replacing before then. They will become obsolete at some point.

Contigo bottles (and coffee mugs) have proven really nice to use, cleverly designed and very durable. My coffee mug has been with me 6 years and despite having a fancy mechanism it works 100% despite being used and cleaned almost every day at least once. The water bottles have been with us 2 years but they’re doing just as well. Very impressed with em.

I wouldn’t recomend it for backpacking (not optimised for weight) or if you are gonna pound the hell out of it (a simpler design is best for heavy punishment) but for general use I think it’s the best option.
