Exactly, people are trying to compare this with Khashoggi, which was carried out without the world's media watching and still blew up in the Saudi's face's.
There are many prominent journalists reporting on exactly the same issues he was, so murdering him would achieve nothing.
His brother is probably distraught and it's awful but people are jumping to conclusions way too fast.
Having said that, if it turns out to be true it's fucking wild.

Everyone is going mad over this but surely nobody in Qatar would be this stupid. The whole World Cup is a marketing ploy. There would be zero point in murdering a journalist. How do they benefit?

And I'm saying it's not about me, it's about discrimination within Qatar of Qatari people.
Being Muslim is not normal to me but you bet your life I would never try to stop someone from following their faith and defend their right to practice it.
Your right about Russia and plenty of people did make a fuss about it then, not as much as today I'll grant you.

What about the point of view of gay Qataris? It's not about gay people wanting to visit Qatar, it's their barbaric treatment of gay people that's one of the problems.

I suppose, I think calling their bluff would have paid off though. They were never going to send 6 European captains home, we'll probably never know what the actual sanctions would have been though.

Not wearing an armband isn't exactly the same as wearing one with the opposite message.
They should have worn them regardless of repercussions to make a statement but as a gay person, I personally don't agree with what you said.
teabagmoustache t1_ix7t4r5 wrote
I get that it was an FA decision agreed by the European nations but it is pathetic behaviour from all the nations involved.
The FA's reasons are that they didn't want to pressure players into getting booked for making a statement but surely that should be up to the players themselves.
Accepting a yellow card for wearing an armband would have been an even bigger statement but they all collectively shit their pants.

This is the part people are disagreeing with.
They make no money from the World Cup.
You turned the conversation into something completely irrelevant instead of just accepting you got that detail wrong.

The BBC does not sell it's coverage rights to third parties. Rights to broadcast the World Cup are paid to FIFA.
They sell their own content to other providers, like UK Gold and Brit Box for example but they do not profit from broadcasting the World Cup.
