I’m not sure about that. There is absolutely no reason for TikTok or any personal social media but the state uses other social media as a way to disseminate information.

There are some legitimate uses for work related social media on a state device. The Department of Labor posts closings and careers on Facebook. AOT links to road conditions, Fish and Wildlife posts information as well. I’m not sure any of them use TokTok though.

I had a fight with gmp about this actually. As I was building my house the meter to the old house spiked enough to burn out 2 smart meters. The first one they replaced and said nothing, the second on they replaced and said you need a new meter box. I said, let me see and called and electrician who said it would be a few thousand as the wires to the house were not up to current code and would need to be replaces as well. I politely declined and said, a new meter with a 100 amp fuse is a couple hundred and I’ll pay to have it installed. GMP hemmed and hawed at which point I said, it is either that or I opt out of a smart meter and you can send someone here to read the thing manually. The line men there for the service cutoff didn’t believe me but when they called the office their tune quickly changed when the office said it was absolutely within customers rights to request a dumb meter. It cost 600 for the new box, breaker and installation and the meters stopped frying.

The moral of the story is, even when they are keeping the power on, at the end of the day they are a for profit business and every decision they make is to ultimately make money. Don’t be bullied by them.

If they say it is on, and you have checked you breaker, keep reporting it as out.

I’ve experienced similar things. Called, left a message, no call back, called again, get an appt like a week later.

I have accepted the fact that UVVMC is far reaching and since they take my insurance I usually go to express care. Not the ER, the walk-in one. The wait is usually 30 to 60 minutes and the care is the same. Maybe less personal but I don’t really care. When something is wrong I just want treatment, I don’t need to be asked about the kids or job.

Also, thank you for having the one post on the front page that is not a picture of a dog.

> does this proposal threaten to “destroy” the character of the community, or does it provide needed services?

It does both. The issue as presented is a false flag.

First, will it destroy the character of the community. Absolutely, a 99 unit facility built where there was once a field will change all the things brought up in the article. It will increase traffic, business will be built to cater to the population that works there, putting a place like that in what was once a field is a first step to a diminishing rural aesthetic.

Second, does it provide a needed service? ABSOLUTELY! It is not like old people are a finite population. Everyone will be old at one point and many will need a place like this to go. The way we treat our elderly is near criminal and projects like this are at the very least a first step to addressing that.

Maybe if we were able to get over the “you’re wrong! No, you’re wrong! “ mentality and have an actual discussion we could as a society make progress.

The real question that should be getting asked is, are the changes to the character of the town that are needed to support the elderly acceptable. If not, consider a different approach, if so, start building. The longer both sides refuse to admit they are both right and both wrong the longer divisive stuff like that can be used to further drive a wedge between poor and middle class people so we don’t look around and notice the buffet of prosperity we are supposedly being served is nothing but scraps.

*The fact nobody agrees this should be a conversation speaks volumes about reddits problem with group think.

That is the Reddit way. Make a comment, then block the users so they can’t respond. You will quickly find Reddit is full of conformation bias and groupthink. Please don’t let it be anything more than entertainment. Enjoy.

18 years on a million seems about right. The passive income is what extends it out to 18 years. If you are putting it in CD’s you are not investing it all at once and are earning maybe 30k year off of it. You are paying taxes on that money as well. VT taxes interest, social security, pensions, basically everything you earn.

In that end a wisely invested million will earn you 2k a month in income and continue to return less as the principal is drawn down on.

Regular care and feeding of a house with no mortgage is probably close to 1200 a month in heat, repairs and taxes.

1 million sounds like a lot but having it only last 18 years is completely reasonable given Vermont high cost of living.
