If you're more interested in psychology and small-scale family dynamcs, do The Sopranos, but if you find politics/economics more interesting, then do The Wire.

Season 2 of The Wire is such a massive change of gears from season 1, it can be really jarring to first-time viewers, and a lot of people see it as an outlier and a departure from the core of the show, but once you've seen the whole series, its placement makes way more sense, and people who've rewatched it consider it one of the best.

In general, I'd also recommend people starting The Wire understand that it's super dense and will require a high degree of attention. If you're second-screening or doing other stuff while it's on in the background, you'll have a really hard time getting into it.

Mr. Robot's season 2 has a similar issue. The whole season revolves around a big twist, making everything feel weird and just generally off, and most people seemed to find the twist cheap and that's when the general popularity of the show disappeared, but I think seasons 3 and 4 are excellent and even if 2 seems like a slog, it's worth pushing through. Similar to The Wire, I also find Mr. Robot S2 to be more effective upon rewatch.

Surprised to hear you guys are finding it depressing/dark. Maybe it's because all the other stuff I watch, but I find watching likeable mostly good people working hard to solve problems the opposite of depressing.

Yea situations get intense and dire, and there's high stakes, but depressing/dark/dour? Not to me. If anything I find the idea of a reality were government cares at least a tiny bit about scientific progress incredibly invigorating, but maybe those elements don't come into play until a bit later.

No they’re not… so as long as he gives them material he’s gold. And he’s not a lifelong politician so he’s incapable of not saying a dumb thing once in a while, and crime will always happen in NYC so then every publication gets to have some thinkpiece on why a crime happens after we elected a cop as mayor.

I've lived in NYC my entire 30+ years, have lived in Washington Heights for 4+ years, take the train 5+ times/week often late back to the Heights, and I rarely see any crime. Honestly can't remember the last time I saw something worse than a lazy bumfight.

I guess it's funny to just make shit up to attempt to prove some dumbass point, but maybe try actually living here instead of brigading/shitposting like a fucking twat, or just to the fuck back to r/podunkshitholenobodycaresabout where you belond.

Breaking Bad is probably the best pure thriller TV series I've seen, but The Sopranos does so much more in terms of thematic and psychological depth and incredibly nuanced characterizations.
