The Get Shorty series is great, hilarious, but also super dark. If anything a problem I had with the first season is how much awful shit the main characters do and it’s treated pretty lightly, but the tone isn’t really super cartoonish.

Overall I think the characters make good decisions. She straight up says “nope” about going down the hallway initially, her first instinct upon seeing the camera room is immediately to leave, using the chair to prop open the creepy closing door, Justin Long tries extra hard to keep the gun, etc.

Sure all of these get negated to continue the plot, but compared to most horror movies I think there’s a pretty good effort made in terms of having the characters make at least some choices you might.

I don’t think a consensus would put him head and shoulders ahead of Robert Eggers or Ari Aster as far as this last generation of horror oriented directors go.

I’d agree he’s perceived as THE “social issue horror/genre movie” guy but in terms of overall horror I don’t think a Family Feud style poll of modern movie fans would end up with him as a clear #1.

Hulu’s main benefit is FX, and having Abbott Elementary isn’t bad, but their movie selection is skimpy. Netflix has more recognizable flagship shows like Stranger Things and Cobra Kai, and has a lot of movie options though it’s more quantity than a quality.

If you haven’t seen FX stuff like It’s Always Sunny, Fargo, The Shield, Atlanta, Justified, and The Americans you’ll have options to dig back into with Hulu, and newer shows like The Bear and Reservation Dogs are getting a lot of love, and when they do put out movies like Prey and Palm Springs they’re pretty good.
