Reply to TIL that in Tok Pisin, the English-based creole language spoken by millions in Papua New Guinea, the vocabularly is often unrecognizably shifted in meaning from English, for example: "as ples" [ass place -> place of origin], "maus gras" [mouth grass -> moustache], or "belhat" [belly hot -> angry] by nehala
Yeah there's similar language, Bislama, used in Vanuatu
I remember a sign in Port Vila:
'TABU: blong sakem toti olbaot kipim town blong yu i klin oltaem'
Translation:
Taboo to throw your things all about. Keep your town clean all the time.

yeah have been to Tuvalu.. it's an atoll a mile wide at the thickest part, but most is maybe 20-100m wide. Met and hung out with some locals there, when I said I lived 300kms from the ocean he could barely believe me.

Bacteria are usually what cause food to spoil, but they may require oxygen. The jars are pasteurized (sterilized) and sealed during production, this kills any existing bacteria and keeps others from getting in. Once you break the seal, the microbes floating in the air can get in it and cause it to spoil.

Reply to ELI5: Why is Google just so dominant? by Arakis-balls
There are a lot of old search engines that don't exist anymore. Altavista, Ask Jeeves, Excite, Lycos etc. Most didn't survive the dotcom crash around 2000. Yahoo is still around though. It was the dominant search engine at mid 1990s, but their page was more cluttered (it was simpler than the current page though).
