Reply to Happy birthday Pittsburgh! On this day in 1758 General Forbes founded Fort Pitt by chuckie512
Nobody at that time knew what the road on the right bank of the Allegheny was for or why they felt compelled to call it '28', but construction began nonetheless.

And they didn't even use the best picture... I guess the trees kinda make it look like it created a crater/explosion when it hit?

Reply to Sheep flocks operate as a type of ‘collective intelligence’ and elect temporary leaders to guide them while moving. The fluidity of this process is extremely surprising. by nimobo
I grew up on a sheep farm, herding them on foot and on a bike. There was clearly never a leader. It always made the most sense in my head to treat them as a bubble of hyrdoscopic liquid with yourself blowing at them through a straw. You pushed around the edge to get them to go in the direction that you wanted, but had to be careful not to push too hard when they got to a choke point, or they'd splatter everywhere. Different factors, such as the presence of rams or lambs would increase the reaction, causing them to be more or less likely to break up and more reactive.

Agreed. Cats are one of the most ecologically destructive things that humans carry with them around the planet. One of the leading reasons that our songbird populations are collapsing.

Going back to the 90's, the town was in pretty crappy shape. An investor bought up most of the downtown on the assumption that riverboat gambling would be legalized. It wasn't. He has, since that time, pretty much ignored the place, letting it decay to the sad point that we see today.

A decade or so ago, the fire chief sent an open letter to the mayor saying that he wouldn't order his men to enter most of the buildings because they were so unsound. At that point, I'd say we can ignore the niceties.

And what is that windowed room above and between the Ft Pitt Tunnels on the west end? Break room? Conference room? Penthouse?
