That’s a good question. Idk exactly what municipalities agree with the cable/telecom companies. Anyone?

Folks are paying wildly different rates for such a basic service. Our Internet costs aren’t internationally competitive. Poor people can’t afford service. More speed arguably isn’t what’s needed.

Basically utilities are allowed to recover their operating expenses plus earn a reasonable return on their capital investments. See here for a quick overview: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Utility_ratemaking

Ugh I know, it sucks. May not help much but consider getting the lowest speed possible and buying your own modem/router if you haven’t already.

Yeah I know it sucks, but what would have happened to rates without the regulator?

Super-helpful, thanks. And I guess based on what you wrote that the FCC truly does limit the states; I’ll do some Googling to see if there have been any creative legal attempts to do an end-run around them (or batter through them lol). Appreciate the insight.

I guess I’d trust that firewalls can be maintained between government agencies. That’s like the whole separation between, say, prosecutors and judges.

LOL! I’ve heard of municipal broadband before. I have no idea if it’s generally thought to be a good idea but definitely worth discussing.

American Airlines flies this route as well nowadays, in case this helps. Looks like Delta doesn’t anymore?

Assuming downtown to downtown, flying does indeed win slightly if the weather is perfect, in my experience. It’s not crazy to check airfares between BOS and LGA.

It’s like airlines. There is a bucket of cheap fares that are only valid 14 days or more in advance, but they can sell out even before then.

The Acela time savings is more like 20 mins. I have ridden both and personally don’t think Acela is worth it.

Agree with (1), but on (2) I personally find regular Northeast Regional (not business Northeast Regional) to be fine, mostly because I don’t care about an assigned seat or a free soda.

The cheap fares are 14-day advance purchase, subject to availability, on the Northeast Regional. Similar in principle to airline pricing.
