Reply to What are your "reading goals"? by basketsnbeer
I want to read some books on writing screenplays, some major science fiction novels, and my books on deep learning.

One of my favorite jokes is a social scientist using Oprah as a citation. As in, you put out some dubious fact and then back it up with "citation Oprah".

State College is more representative of the United States than a big city, like New York City, in my opinion. It has your typical middle class suburbs. State College is very ordinary although the college dominates the town more than other college towns.
However, there is probably less support for moving there from abroad than in New York City which has a French expat community.

Trains used to be a technological wonder and inspired a financial mania. I did not realize this until I read the book "Devil Take the Hindmost: A History of Financial Speculation". This explains why so much rail infrastructure was built and why it has scaled back so dramatically.

I have never explored the York area, but Lancaster seems a bit more prosperous than other parts of the state. It has a decent arts scene and tech scene.

Reply to Can Williamsport, Pa. be funnier? This New York comedian and cartoonist wants to try. by narkj
I wrote a witty play about a writer's retreat in the Poconos. The main joke was the writer's retreat was a former honeymoon hotel and kept all the old sleazy decor, so writers did more hooking up than serious writing.
The Pajama Factory does create a bit of an art scene in Williamsport. I checked out their new art supplies store recently. But the city does not have a literary scene. There are no poetry readings or open mike nights.

There was a creepy house in Coudersport which looked very gothic, a real haunted mansion, but I think it was finally remodeled. I have not been there in years, but I took a lot of photos of that house.

I'm currently reading the book "Little Fuzzy" by H. Beam Piper, one of the few classic science fiction writers from the state. He was born in Altoona where you can visit his grave and he died in Williamsport. The city on planet Zarathustra is Mallorysport which I assume was inspired by the name Williamsport.

This shows a very poor understanding of the world. More and more, I have come to realize that politics is based on a very poor understanding of the factors which lead to bad outcomes. A lot of political analysis is just pitiful. Political activists operate based on theories with very poor explanatory power.

New Hope is probably a long drive for you but it is a great town for tourists with many restaurants and boutiques. You can walk along the canal. You can also cross a bridge into New Jersey to explore Lambertville.
