I'm constantly amazed by how many people post on Reddit with this myopic concept of pop music as the totality of ALL music. The kind of pop that clamors for the top of what zombies constitute "charts" nowadays, happy to sacrifice all style and substance for whatever the trends are, is a small bit of all of the music made by everyone. It's vain, shallow and disposable. Who cares what happens to it?

Rolling Stones- something happened to me yesterday- from between the buttons. Ends with…

“Well thank you very much and now I think it's time for us all to go. So from all of us to all of you, not forgetting the boys in the band and our producer, Reg Thorpe, we’d like to say God bless. So, if you're out tonight, don’t forget, if you're on your bike, wear white. Evening all.”

> Edit: But one problem is that the algorithms only show to you what they think that you want to see. So if you do not diversify your musical input, you do not even see the content that exists, that others watch.

This is the crux of my objections. Too much decision making is left to machines for my comfort. A great band that would be getting positive word of mouth from a good show may never see the light of day in an AI-dominated world for reasons often obscure to the end user.

I tihnk it's so ironic that the assholes of the highway, 18-wheelers, think they are aking some kind of populist point by being even bigger assholes- getting even more in the way.

What about the freedom of individuals to not die in a 40-car pileup because some pill-popping dumbass was swiping right when they should have been watching the road?

> I have had a quick look and I can’t find a definitive list of must listen-tos.

Well yeah, that's the thing about tastes. Everyone's are different.

It's not hard to find lists of favorite artists. Why not do a little research, discover which ones you like?

For instance, everyone would tell you Sonic Youth's Daydream Nation is the one to listen to. But I'd tell you Sister, or The Eternal.

There is no definitive list. It's subjective. Find your own way.

Beatles contemporary you might like- Spirit- 12 Dreams of Dr. Sardonicus

Chicago's first albums had that same sort of clean, dry sound.

Also, you know the whole 70s MOR rock movement owes it's characteristic warm sound to George Martin and the Beatles- Fleetwood Mac for instance

For someone later who looks back to 60s music and production, try Paul Weller.

If we don't all stick up for intellectual freedom, one day the censors will be gunning for the materials YOU think are important, but by then it will be too late.

The whole Ashcroft family is composed of ideologues who are members of a Christian sect that believe speaking in tongues is real. These are the same people who think talking about LGTBQ+ issues AT ALL is to be interested too much in SEX.

Whose sexual interests are we talking about, Jay? Hmm??

This is an offense to a wide swath of Missourians who the right-wingers are more than happy to leave behind/insult/trample on in the their relentless pursuit for the most fundamentalist of states title.

I'm glad to see this called out. The pursuit of profit to the exclusion of the greater good is incredibly irresponsible but ubiquitous- as we see around us that's the model we're created for our current reality. I feel like there's a special burden on tech since it's so easy for an addict to spend all day and night gambling online in their pajamas. But the trend seems to just be snowballing so frankly I don't see much momentum for a backlash.

Having been a student of Art History myself, I’d say the only real evidence of the correct orientation of this painting is the photo of the painting on Mondrian’s easel. A lot of the work of 20th century abstract art has been subject to the interpretation of the gatekeepers of the meaning of modern art- gallery owners and academics, mainly- who stick doggedly to their self-designed orthodoxy to keep their exalted places.

Mondrian’s work is non-representational. He could have well been working in that orientation to make the work easier. So unless Mondrian himself said it, the “thickening at the top” to represent the sky is, when you look closely at it, just as much horse feathers as it is cogent analysis.

I never even think about a video when discovering new music. I almost feel like a crazy person having to say this, but there's a lot to discover about a musician's work by listening to their music. A video is an added layer of interpretation- personally I'd avoid them at first to discover your personal, honest understanding and appreciation.

Clearly you haven't heard any really good ones. The difference to my ears can be dramatic, as extreme as some devices revealing content that others can't. And it's not my imagination. you'd know if you've heard it, and I have.

Schools, of all things, have really been under attack- underfunded and disparaged as of late. It's such a ridiculous, wrong-headed trend. They are places of learning, seeking to improve the lot of younger generations- what could be more important?

Exploring solar power is a perfect example of how they can help the future not be so scary.
